Books
I have included several books I really enjoy. At the moment, these are all children's books, though in the future I will include books which have been important in my own educational journey! Each book has an Amazon Affiliate link, which will allow me to earn a small part of your purchase. Shop local first, if you can!
My Shadow is Purple by Scott Stuart
This book holds a really special place in my heart. My Shadow is Purple is the first book I had the opportunity to read to a classroom of students. We, as a class, engaged in a dialogue about what it means to be a boy or a girl, and how it was possible to be something different than what you may be seen as.
Stuart, the author and illustrator, tells the story of a young child who doesn't fit into the traditional gender mold. Stuart uses playful rhyme and bright colors to convey how all individuals are unique and special, just as they are.
Grandad's Camper by Harry Woodgate
I purchased Grandad's Camper at LA County Museum of Art in a special hardcover format where the book itself was shaped like the camper! I have brought this book to several educational settings where the format and art style makes it very popular.
Woodgate, the author and illustrator, tells about queer love in such a comforting way. Woodgate deals with themes of loss, though mainly focuses on how there is love and joy to be found even when sadness is present.
Many Shapes of Clay: A Story of Healing by Kenesha Sneed
Many Shapes of Clay was another museum purchase. This book has been inspirational in my own journey as an artist, educator, and student. I hadn't previously thought of incorporating artistic mediums into children's literature, but now I have many ideas brewing.
Sneed, the author and illustrator, deals with grief through clay. Sneed allows the characters space to feel sadness, while still learning how to be okay and adjust in a different world.
